East Allington Whacky Races, Devon

UK Soapbox Race Calendar Feed - February 9, 2012 - 17:08
Start: May 12 2012 - 11:00am Timezone: Etc/GMT

Now in it’s 7th year, the Whacky Races comprises a go-kart or soap-box style race through the village of East Allington, with competitors racing time trial style for the prestigous Luscombe Trophy. A sophisticated timing system will time each of the karts as they race down East Allington’s steep hill, starting at the school, passing the church, the Fortescue Arms and the treacherous Fortescue corner and finishing outside the Village Hall. There are categories for adults as well as children and a variety of fun prizes.

The concept is simple and anyone can enter, all you need is a kart. The kart must have 4 wheels, a proper steering system and brakes and be deemed by the event safety advisor as being safe to race. Competitors must then sign their safety waiver, don their crash helmets and make their way to the top of the hill. The road is transformed into a Silver Stone style race track for the day, with safety barriers, straw bales, advertising banners and bunting lining the route and hundreds of eager spectators cheering the brave racers through the village.

As well as the racing there will be a whole host of stalls and attractions including a bouncy castle, face painting, gladiator style giant cotton bud duels, donkey rides, sports day style races, live music and a feast of food and drinks to keep the crowds sustained throughout the day.

HI burnerboy.Dan is correct, we will happily let you run a Trike at Border Bogie. See http://www.borderbogie.co.uk for an entry form if you need one.Trikes classed as a Bogie but a separate prize. (If there's any Trike entries.)If you're further South you could ask Richards Castle, it really is a superb event, they let me run my Trike there in 2010. You need to speak to Ian Broome, his details are on http://www.richardscastlesoapbox.co.ukSome old info here.http://ukgsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=soapbox&action=display&thread=2121There's an image of my Trike in this thread.http://ukgsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?act....ead=2106&page=1 and Richards Castle Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVnBK-bo4RsBe good to see some Trikes racing, great scope for aerodynamics and innovation.Cheers Rich

Titanium, eh? Going for a lightweight chassis then. That's brave.

[We'll not be at Dalby though, so the rest of you can have a chance of winning something]That's very sporting of you. Looking forward to seeing your new machine (and beating it fair and square). We still need to pick up all the titanium for our chassis, but the rest of the machine is as good as finished. With a bit of luck we'll be ready to test on the Friday night before Border Bogies and get the machine painted before Dalby

I just got back from the steel merchant with 50 worth of box section that will form the chassis of our sidehack this year. It'll get its first outing at Scammonden, if that's still actually going to happen. Failing that, we'll be racing at Border Bogies, Catterline, Cairngorm and Belchford. We'll not be at Dalby though, so the rest of you can have a chance of winning something.

Where are all you avid side-hackers? Are you all still hibernating? Who's racing this year and where are you going? Monkey Business have entered Catterline and Dalby and we hope to get to Border Bogies. May also run at Richards Castle if they'll have us and/or CSEx if Dick can be persuaded to go that far.New wheels and brakes for this year and a few tweaks to try to get a bit more speed, but all a bit sad if there's nobody to race against - I really don't want to have to build a new soapbox just to get a bit of banter going.
